In what ways can individuals, especially non-clinicians, contribute to mental health awareness? A big part of it is learning to talk and share about mental health openly. If we do not share our mental health with others, we allow stigma to continue. The silence makes it harder for people in prioritizing their own mental well-being.
Here are several ideas to promote mental health awareness within your community:
Speak up for yourself
“ Out of 5 people, 4 think that physical health is much more important than our mental well-being.”
How often do you see someone take a mental health day? Do you take a mental health day yourself? Do you think they are honest in talking about mental health
We only take rest if we are sick or have bad stomach aches. Even if we have headaches, we still don't take rest but instead, take painkillers to lessen the pain. Most of us don’t sleep or reward ourselves after finishing a drained and exhausting day. So, the next time that you have the opportunity to have a rest, make sure to also include your mental well-being.
Taking action to advocate for your mental health empowers others. You'll likely inspire others to do the same.
Learn more about mental health
Don't underestimate the importance of mental fitness and mental health. Rather take time to learn and understand to know the difference between the two. Learn about common mental health conditions, signs of burnout, and how to take care of yourself when you're experiencing symptoms.
You should pay attention to your own warning signs in the early stages of feeling overwhelmed and to any triggers you may experience. If you find resources that work well and can benefit others, share them with those around you.
Talk to someone you trust
Find someone that may help you in improving your mental well-being. It may be your teacher, colleague, seniors, classmates, or someone older and have a lot of experience in this field. You should share stories or insights with them. You should learn how to communicate and how to speak up about your thoughts and feelings.
If you want to talk to someone about your day or experiences that you want to share and receive advice, we are here happy to help, to listen to your stories, and guide you through being more comfortable in sharing. It is not just you who need someone to talk to. It may be hard to communicate at first but it would be relieving to let out all the emotions building up inside you.
